Police continue search for offender in Highland Park hit-and-run

Highland Park police are still seeking information related to a June hit-and-run that killed a local public official.

While bicycling, Maureen Wener, 49, of Deerfield, was struck by a car around 12:35 p.m. on June 2 at Piccadilly and Deerfield roads in Highland Park. The driver of the car fled the scene before emergency responders arrived, police said, and Wener died from her injuries later that afternoon at Condell Medical Center in Libertyville.

The Highland Park Police Department and the Lake County Major Crash Assistance Team continue to search for the motorist and are asking anyone with information related to the incident to call (847) 432-7730 or email police@cityhpil.com.

Wener was an officer with the Deerfield Public Schools District 109 Board of Education. To the local caucus in 2021, Wener said prior to her election, “I love Deerfield. Volunteering my talents and skills on the School Board will be another way to give back to the community that has given all of us so much.”

Superintendent of D109 Michael Simeck wrote in a statement, “Maureen’s ready wit, optimism, and affection for our staff punctuated all of her conversations. We have lost a passionate advocate for our schools, a beloved mother and partner of many of our staff, and a giving community member.”
