EVANSTON, Unwell. — A mother and daughter from Chicago are unhurt after police say a person allegedly jumped onto their vehicle and smashed within the windshield and sunroof in Evanston on Friday.

In accordance with Evanston police, firefighters with the local fire department witnessed the alleged attack that unfolded just before 4 p.m. along Emerson Street, near Dodge Avenue.

Officers say a 33-year-old man allegedly jumped on top of a Toyota Rav 4, just east of Dodge Avenue, and commenced damaging the vehicle while a mother and her 16-year-old daughter were inside.

Police say fire crews attempted to intervene, however the man, who officers say is an Evanston resident, reportedly appeared combative, so fire crews called police for assistance.

Police say the mother and daughter were then in a position to escape from the automotive without injury.

When officers arrived on the scene, the person was allegedly still on top of the vehicle. Officers say de-escalation efforts were unsuccessful, and the person needed to be removed.

While police were attempting to remove the person from the vehicle, officers say he allegedly resisted arrest.

An officer pulled out a Taser in an try and subdue the person, and police say he allegedly grabbed it, however the officer was still in a position to deploy it and take the person into custody.

Police say the windshield and sunroof were shattered and there was additional glass, sheet metal and interior damage to the vehicle.

In accordance with police, the person suffered lacerations in the course of the incident and was taken to the hospital for evaluation and treatment.

Currently, it’s unclear what led to the alleged attack.
