A bicyclist was hospitalized Wednesday afternoon after he struck a parked delivery van in Glencoe, according to the village’s Public Safety Department.

Glencoe Deputy Chief Andrew Perley said the cyclist — a male around the age of 50 — was transported to the hospital in “critical condition” around 4:30 p.m.

According to Perley the truck was parked near the curb on Sheridan Road just north of South Avenue when the northbound cyclist crashed into the rear of the vehicle.

In that area, Sheridan Road has bicycle lanes on either edge of the roadway. Perley said certain vehicles are permitted to temporarily park in the bike lanes. Exactly where the truck was parked remains under investigation, Perley said.

Local first-responders, with assistance from the region’s Major Crash Assistance Team, were still on the scene as of 5:45 p.m. Perley said the area north of South Avenue on Sheridan will be closed for about two hours.
