Caldwell buries rebound to lift New Trier past Loyola in sectional play

It took nearly 20 minutes of extra soccer, but New Trier finally broke through.

Lauren Caldwell jabbed a loose ball into the back of the net in the second overtime, giving the Trevians a 1-0 lead it maintained in a sectional semifinal win against Loyola Academy Tuesday, May 23, in Evanston.

“I don’t even know (what happened). I kind of blacked out. It was like a toe poke and it went in,” Caldwell said following the win.

Caldwell was the third and maybe fourth Trevian to touch the ball on the play, which started with Anna Paden’s corner kick. Paden’s boot first found the head of a leaping Josie Noble, who’s shot was saved and the rebound rattled around near the goal line. Both Nora Westol and Caldwell fought with Ramblers defenders for the ball until Caldwell got a toe to it.

New Trier hung on for the final four minutes to advance in the IHSA Class 4A postseason. The Trevians will take on Lane Tech at 7 p.m. on Friday, May 26, on Lazier Field in Evanston. Lane Tech bested the sectional’s top seed, Evanston, on Tuesday.

In the nightcap, No. 2 New Trier and No. 3 Loyola went toe to toe for the entire 80 minutes of regulation time and the first 10 minute overtime period.

Caldwell’s goal came about six minutes into the second overtime.
